Seattle native Kristin Nelson earned her degree in ceramic sculpture from the University of Washington after studying weaving in Sweden. She has been a ceramic artist ever since.
Kristin current energies have been concentrated on developing and producing VIT ceramics, a range of vases and lamps in organic shapes. “Vit” the Swedish word for white and is the color of the thin, raised white stripes that give this collection a simple, modern feel and a Scandinavian sensibility.
VIT ceramics are created At Kri Kri Studio in Seattle. Nelson starts by using the ancient coil and pinch technique to produce her original pieces. The surfaces, which become softly dimpled
from the pinching, reveal the artist’s touch and sparkle with reflected light. Production quantities are achieved using molds of the originals. Raised, white stripes applied by hand add another layer of texture and ensure that each piece is unique.
The growth of Kri Kri Studio has been organic like the shapes Nelson makes. Often all it takes to spark a new design idea is a chance encounter or a fleeting glimpse of a contour. By continually adapting, following her passions and instincts, Nelson has been in the business of producing
high quality, handmade ceramics for over twenty years.
Kristin, or Kri Kri as she is also known, says, "My goal is to bring warmth and beauty into the home with handcrafted objects made carefully and thoughtfully."
